Happy New Year. Except that the New Year brought some really horrible and disturbing news, news I was already well aware of but chose to more or less ignore.

Ten years ago, in 2004, the Iraq war had already been “on” for some months. Like many I had protested against it, but it went ahead anyway, making a mockery of the idea that democracy any kind of will of the People. News from Iraq was sickening and I felt helpless.

Eventually the whole mess just kind of went away. The troops left, leaving behind a power vacuum filled by a nice sectarian disaster.

Today I learned that it as not over and will never be over. Like the albatross hanging around the neck of the Ancient Mariner, the crime of the invasion and occupation of Iraq will hang over every one of us – every one of us.

Today Democracy Now reported that
