How From the Shadows reveals Joseph Wright as a master of drama, suspense and storytelling

 

Back in London, at the fabulous National Gallery the Joseph Wright of Derby exhibition was absorbing in a way that felt almost cinematic.

I’ve always been a fan of Wright and it was good to see my favourites here all together in this small but powerful show.

Wright is often praised for his extraordinary command of light and darkness, but what struck me most was how powerfully he stages a scene. His subjects are not simply figures in a composition; they are characters caught at charged moments of curiosity, fear, scepticism and wonder.

In Wright of Derby: From the Shadows, his dramatic chiaroscuro does more than dazzle the eye. It directs our attention like a camera: faces flare out of the dark, hands hover over objects, glances cross the room, and every illuminated table becomes a small theatre of knowledge, doubt and moral tension.

The paintings repeatedly gather people around something strange, exciting or troubling: a scientific instrument, a classical sculpture, bones, bladders, animals. Yet the objects are only the beginning. What matters is the human response to them—the hesitation, fascination, resistance and unease that pass from face to face.

That is why Wright feels to me like one of the most cinematic of painters. He builds suspense through light, arranges his viewers like actors, and turns looking itself into the action of the picture. His tableaux are not still-life settings but storyboards: each surface holds the clue to a drama unfolding just beyond speech.

The result is far more than virtuoso light and shade. Wright uses darkness to deepen the emotional stakes, drawing out themes of death, melancholy, morality, scepticism and the sublime. Like Caravaggio before him, he understands that illumination is never neutral: it reveals, exposes and unsettles.
